4. What is The Day of The Lord

There are 4 terms in the Bible that we are going to look at
  • Time of Jacob's Trouble
  • Great Tribulation
  • The Day of the Lord
  •  Armageddon
We need to look at what the bible have to say to determine if all these terms are referring to the same event and what they say about this event or events.

I. The time of Jacob's trouble
The phrase "the time of Jacob's trouble" is a quote from Jeremiah 30:7

Jeremiah 30:4-7
And these are the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s troublebut he shall be saved out of it.

In Jeremiah 30, we find that the Lord is speaking to Jeremiah the prophet about Judah and Israel (30:3-4). In verse 3, the Lord promises that one day in the future, He will bring both Judah and Israel back to the land that He had promised their forefathers. Verse 5 describes a time of great fear and trembling. Verse 6 describes this time in a way that pictures men going through the pains of childbirth, again indicating a time of agony. But there is hope for Judah and Israel, for though this is called "the time of Jacob's distress" (NASB), the Lord promises He will save Jacob (referring to Judah and Israel) out of this time of great trouble (verse 7). Read more:http://www.gotquestions.org/Jacobs-trouble.html#ixzz3E7SiPpL9

Notice the phrase "There is no other time like this". Therefore, any other place in scripture claiming this same thing must be talking about the same time in the history of mankind.

Jeremiah 30:7 7How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.

II Great Tribulation

Matthew 24:15-22
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.

In the Olivet Discourse of Matthew 24 we get this same phrase that describes the Great Tribulation highlighted in red above. So we can say that the Time of Jacob's trouble is referring to the Great Tribulation that Jesus is talking about in Matthew 24.

The other passages that refer to the Great Tribulation are Daniel 12:1b, which says, "And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time." It seems that Jesus was quoting this verse when He spoke the words recorded in Matthew 24:21. Also referring to the Great Tribulation is Jeremiah 30:7, "Alas! for that day is great, There is none like it; And it is the time of Jacob’s distress, But he will be saved from it."

The phrase “Jacob’s distress” refers to the nation of Israel, which will experience persecution and disasters such as have never before been seen.

Daniel 12:1-3 12 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered.Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise[a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.

Therefore we can say that this passage is referring to the same event that Jesus is talking about when he refers to "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place" in Matthew 24 above. Thus we can say that the Daniel 12:1 is referring to the same event as stated in Revelation 12:7-9.

Revelation 12:7-9 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan,who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

This time of Great Distress in Daniel 12 is the same time of distress in Matthew 24 and the same as the Day of the Lord mentioned in Revelation.

In Matthew 24:21, Jesus says, "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall." In this verse Jesus is referring to the event of Matthew 24:15, which describes the revealing of the abomination of desolation, the man also known as the Antichrist. Also, Jesus in Matthew 24:29-30 states, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days . . . the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory." In this passage, Jesus defines the Great Tribulation (v.21) as beginning with the revealing of the abomination of desolation (v.15) and ending with Christ's second coming (v.30).

III. Day of the Lord

Below are more bible verses that gave a description of this time of war or The Day of the Lord. Zaphaniah mentioned that there will be clouds and thick darkness during the war.

Zephaniah 1:14-18
Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. A day of wrath is that day, A day of trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation, A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of trumpet and battle cry Against the fortified cities And the high corner towers. read more.

Isaiah 13:6 - Howl ye; for the day of the LORD [is] at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

Revelation 19:19-21 - And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.   (Read More…)

Isaiah 13:6-13
6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty. 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt. 8 Terror will seize them, pain and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor. They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. 9 See, the day of the LORD is coming --a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. 11 I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. 12 I will make man scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.

2 Peter 3:6-7,10
By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

IV Armageddon
The term Armageddon is related to this time of War and the term “Armageddon” only occurs in Revelation 16:16, “Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”

Revelation 16 is the chapter which describes the 7 bowls of God's wrath being poured upon the Earth. The battle of Armageddon is preceded by the pouring out of the seven bowls of God's judgement or wrath.

In Revelation 15:1 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. we were told that when the 7 bowls are poured out, the wrath of God is completed. The wrath of God begins when the 7th seal opens. The seven trumpets sounded one at a time upon the opening of the 7th seal.

Revelation 16:14 - 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. 13 Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.

15 Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”
16 Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
The battle of Armageddon is the Day that the Beast and the False prophet with their army goes to war with Jesus in Revelation 19.

Armageddon is a time of great world war, there will be thick clouds and darkness caused by Fire Judgement which is the effect of a nuclear war. We will see this being described by Zachariah.

Zachariah 14:12-15
12 This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day people will be stricken by theLord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14 Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15 A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.

Isaiah 24:4-6
The earth dries up and withers,
    the world languishes and withers,
    the heavens languish with the earth.
The earth is defiled by its people;
    they have disobeyed the laws,
violated the statutes
    and broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore a curse consumes the earth;
    its people must bear their guilt.
Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
    and very few are left.

We are told by Isaiah that the day of the Lord is when God's wrath come upon mankind to destroy sinners.  And when the last of the bowl judgement is pour out upon the earth there will be a great earthquake which have no parallel in human history, all the cities of the world will collapse.

Revelation 16:17-19
17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed.

Finally Jesus came with His army from Heaven and descended upon the Beast and the false prophet to avenge the saint's blood in Revelation 19 at the battle of Armageddon.

THE TOUCH DOWN

This Ezekiel 38 & 39 is indeed when Christ will fight Israel's enemies with Gog their leader and will be here in the flesh.
Now, look carefully at Ezekiel 38:19, the earthquake is the greatest in history and matches Zechariah 14:4. This earthquake is definitely the mark of His presence on earth at the moment of His touch down. In Zechariah we have no doubt that it is His touch down. Zech 14:3 "the Lord will go forth and fight ...", verse 4 "His feet will stand ...".
Whose feet? There is no escape of it "The Lord's feet" (verse 3). When did the Lord have feet?
This earthquake in Ezekiel 38:19 is so awesome "fish of the sea, birds of heavens, beasts of the field, ALL the creeping things, ALL the men on the face of the earth will shake at My presence".
WHOSE PRESENCE???? Major verse my friend. This "presence" can be proven further to make no doubt that Ezekiel 38 & 39 is the showdown between Christ and Anti-Christ (Gog).
In Ezekiel 39:22 "Israel will know that I AM the Lord their God from that day onward."
So it's Israel's redemption. To make this conclusive, look at Ezekiel 39:7 "the nations will know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in ISRAEL". Why is the Holy one "in" Israel since the rest of Scripture says "Holy one of Israel"? Again, God will be here on earth, in Israel, and in person. Can there be any doubt?
Also, the birds that eat the armies are mentioned both in Revelation and Ezekiel 38 and 39:
Rev 19:17 "And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all [men, both] free and bond, both small and great."
Ezek 39:4 "Thou shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that [is] with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and [to] the beasts of the field to be devoured."
So we have now more confirmation that Ezekiel 38/39 is the Armageddon of Revelation.

Thus we can conclude that the Matthew 24 and Daniel 12 are referring to the same event of Jacob's trouble mentioned in Jeremiah 30 which is also referred to as the Great Tribulation or the Day of the Lord or The Battle of Armageddon. When Jesus arrive, He come from Heaven with an armies of Heaven. It will be an event where the whole earth will be able to see from anywhere on earth.

Revelation 19:7-9
7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear." 9Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' "
Revelation 19:11-21

The Rider on the White Horse

11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair,"Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and mighty men, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave,small and great." 19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image.The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

Daniel 7:8-148 “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being and a mouth that spoke boastfully.

9 “As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
    and the Ancient of Days took his seat.
His clothing was as white as snow;
    the hair of his head was white like wool.
His throne was flaming with fire,
    and its wheels were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire was flowing,
    coming out from before him.
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
    ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
    and the books were opened. (referring to Revelation 20)
11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[a] coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

The Lord Will Appear Zachariah 9:14-17
14 Then the Lord will appear over them;
    his arrow will flash like lightning.
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;
    he will march in the storms of the south,
15     and the Lord Almighty will shield them.
They will destroy
    and overcome with slingstones.
They will drink and roar as with wine;
    they will be full like a bowl
    used for sprinkling[c] the corners of the altar.
16 The Lord their God will save his people on that day
    as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
    like jewels in a crown.
17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!
    Grain will make the young men thrive,
    and new wine the young women.

The Lord Comes and Reigns Zechariah 14 :1-8
1 A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.

2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake[a] in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lordwith no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.

8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.

The Judgment of the Dead Revelation 20:11-15
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
There are a few common phrase that you will see when the Day of the Lord is mentioned. They are:
1. "There is no other time like this" or such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time,
2. "As a woman in travail or like a woman in labor"
3. The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light.
4. I will make man scarcer than pure gold or and very few are left.
5. Earth’s inhabitants are burned up,
6.  A day of trumpet and battle cry or mustering the army for battle
